College News

2 very awesome things happened this week.
First: My smart Tad graduated from college with his Bachelors Degree!
(although he will be starting a Masters program this fall)
Plus he won the 'Accounting Student of the Year' Award!!
Second:
I got my acceptance letter to college!
I went a couple of semesters before I met Tad, but I haven't been back to school in almost 6 years....I start in 2 weeks. Nervous? YES!
To celebrate I wanted to share some of my favorite college movies.

The Water Boy
Such a classic Adam Sandler movie! Our hero is the stuttering social outcast Bobby Boucher who's very loyal to his 'mama'. He goes from being the water boy for the Louisiana Cougars, to hard-hitting linebacker for the Louisiana Mud Dogs when he finally lets his temper get the best of him. If he can keep his extra curricular activities from his mama he just might lead the Mud Dogs to a championship!
Reality Bites
Ok, so Reality Bites is really a POST-college film, bit I still love it. It always reminds me of my sister Danielle. :) Who doesn't love a movie starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, and Ben Stiller? Crazy people, that's who! Winona is Lelaina who graduated as Valedictorian of her university and who strives to make award winning documentaries, who lives with her long time best friend Vickie (Janeane Garofalo) She's been road blocked working as a production assistant to the most annoying man ever. When she snaps and makes her boss look like an idiot she gets unceremoniously fired. Soon after her slacker friend Troy (Hawke) becomes an extra roommate of her when he gets fired from his job for stealing a candy bar. About the same time she starts dating Michael (Stiller), a man who she got into a car accident with. Out of work, and in a strange love triangle she finds herself having to finally make those decisions that come after Graduation Day.
Mona Lisa Smile
Another movie with a great cast. Julia Roberts, Kirstin Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Julia Styles all star in this story of Wellesley, a conservative women's college in the 1950's. Roberts is Katherine, the new History of Art teacher who has the disadvantage of being unmarried, barely 30-something, and somewhat liberal. She finds herself facing off with a class of over prepared, slightly mischievous young women who challenge her to find creative ways to instruct the class.
Sydney White
As soon as I saw that Amanda Bynes starred in this movie I was ready to watch it, and once again she did not disappoint! While it's slightly cheesy, it's everything you want from a teen movie. Sydney White is a remake of Snow White. When Sydney gets into college she's determined to get into the Kappa Phi Nu Sorority that her late mother was a part of, despite her plumber upbringing. Unfortunately she has the bad fortune to catch the eye of Tyler Prince, the ex of the sorority's president Rachel Witchburn. Rachel immediately makes it her mission to keep Sydney out of the sorority, which she accomplishes. Luckily the 7 dorks at The Vortex take her in and she finds a new home. When Rachel decides to destroy The Vortex Sydney launches one of her dorks into a campaign for Student Body President to overthrow the evil witch. And of course, Tyler Price is in the middle of it all.

Glory Road
Glory Road was Tad's pick for favorite college movie. It tells the true story of head coach Don Haskins (Josh Lucas) and his 1966 Texas Western basketball team. When Don takes the head coaching position at Texas Western he has to find a way to make the past loosing record into a winning one without the help of things like scholarships and bonuses. His solution is to recruit the best players he can find, regardless of race which is unheard of. With a team of 7 black players and 5 white they quickly become the team to beat, but the obstacles they face are nothing close to fair.

A Beautiful Mind
A Beautiful Mind is based on the true story of John Nash's life. It starts at his days as a young math genius at Princeton University where he battles Martin Hansen (Josh Lucas again) for the prestigious career at MIT. While Nash does win the MIT job, he doesn't realize that his world is not really as he imagines it. He finds a woman who understands him and gets married only to discover that he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and not all of his friends are real. After accepting he has a problem he struggles to find a way to deal with it, and finds help in the hands of his old rival Martin Hansen.
And of course, Legally Blonde.
How could I make a list of college movies without mentioning Elle Woods. Life is good for Elle who is the Delta Nu Sorority President, a fashion merchandising student with a 4.0, and dating the most eledgable bachelor in Southern California, Warner Huntington III. Sadly her life is torn apart when Warner dumps her to go to Harvard Law School. Determined to win him back she claws her way into Harvard Law and starts plotting strategy. She is devastated again when she finds Warner engaged to Vivian Kensington, along with being publicly humiliated by her professor in front of her entire class. Deciding to prove everyone wrong she works her butt off and gets a prized internship at the law firm of one of her professors. Now she has to decide if she will let people judge for her her beauty or her brains.

"Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. And happy people just don't shoot their husbands...They just don't"
