Book Club: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

I am now 126 pages into The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and through with Part 1. The first chapter or so was a little overwhelming, and dare I say boring. However, once I got through that I started to see how things fit together.

I love the character of Mikael Blomkvist, the upstanding financial journalist. He tries to be as straightforward and honest as possible, taking that as far as telling his wife he was having an affair and unwilling to stop. (Although I could do without all of the adultery)

I found myself genuinely upset at William Borg, Blomkvist's hated professional rival. I'm hoping he will be involved in the whole Wennerstrom thing and get his in the end.

Lisbeth Salander, or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo caught my interest right from the start. Her all business-no nonsense attitude makes for the kind of strong female character I have a hard time resisting. Her uncanny skills at finding out the innermost secrets of whoever she investigates is awesomely impressive. I love how her boss Dragan Armansky (It suddenly occurs to me to wonder if she got her dragon tattoo in his honor) is quietly obsessed with her. Although she seems to have a growing obsession with Mikael Blomkvist. I seem to remember her being very young, but I have wondered if they will get together later.

And then there's Herr Vanger. The once ridiculously successful businessman who neglected his company into mediocrity to throw his full attention into unraveling the disappearance/murder of his granddaughter Harriett. The flower's he receives each year on his birthday that we saw at the beginning of the book has got me constantly wondering what happened.

Right now I've arrived at the theory that Harriett left on purpose, possibly because she was pregnant & knew that she was very sick in some severe way. She had tried to speak with Vanger and a few others before she disappears but it seems she never had the chance. I'm guessing that she later giving birth to Lisbeth Salander, who we saw visiting her mother who seemed to be ill in some way. Which is, I'm guessing, how everything will come full circle.

So what do you think? Am I crazy delusional or crazy intuitive?!

  1. I liked this book and I am anxious to read the next one but I haven't yet.

I thought that Mikael was divorced? I thought that it was his lover that had the husband...maybe I skimmed too much at that part...

I really like Lisbeth too. Soon you will find out how she gets all her information on people :)

I like your prediction. I never even thought about that when I was reading. I can't wait for you to finish so we can talk more about it :)
