5 Tips to Balance Life with Work

With summer ending and school starting I'm already starting to feel overwhelmed just at the thought of our busy schedules. Tad's starting his Master's Program, I'm taking a couple of classes as well, Wes is starting preschool, and this is on top of our regular day-to-day tasks! Well WebMD has a few suggestions to help out us poor busy people. So whether you need to hear it, or your spouse does, take a look! You never know what you'll learn.

If you're feeling overworked and finding it more challenging than ever to juggle the demands of your job and the rest of your life, you're not alone.

"A lot of people are having a more difficult time finding balance in their lives because there have been cutbacks or layoffs where they work. They're afraid it may happen to them, so they're putting in more hours," says psychologist Robert Brooks, PhD, co-author of The Power of Resilience: Achieving Balance, Confidence, and Personal Strength in Your Life. Focus your time and attention on things you can control.

Here are five ways to bring a little more balance to your daily routine:

1. Build downtime into your schedule.

When you plan your week, make it a point to schedule time with your family and friends and activities that help you recharge.

If a date night with your spouse or a softball game with friends is on your calendar, you'll have something to look forward to and an extra incentive to manage your time well so you don't have to cancel.

"It helps to be proactive about scheduling," says Laura Stack, a productivity expert in Denver and author of SuperCompetent: The Six Keys to Perform at Your Productive Best. "When I go out with my girlfriends, we all whip out our cell phones and put another girls' night out on the calendar for one month later," she says.

Stack also plans an activity with her family -- like going to a movie or the park -- every Sunday afternoon. "We do this because if there's nothing on the schedule, time tends to get frittered away and the weekend may end without us spending quality time together," she says.

Michael Neithardt, an actor and television commercial producer in New York City, wakes up three hours before he has to leave for work so he can go for a run and spend some time with his wife and baby.

"A lot of my friends tend to wake up, shower, and go straight to work. And they often complain about having no time to do anything," he tells WebMD in an e-mail. "I find that if I can get those three hours in the morning, I have a more productive and peaceful workday. I can sure tell the difference when I don't."

Tad is the WORST at giving himself time in the mornings. His motto is 'Get up only when you absolutely HAVE to'.

2. Drop activities that sap your time or energy.

"Many people waste their time on activities or people that add no value -- for example, spending too much time at work with a colleague who is constantly venting and gossiping," says Marilyn Puder-York, PhD, a psychologist and executive coach in New York and Connecticut. She recommends taking stock of activities that aren't really enhancing your career or personal life and minimizing the time you spend on them.

You may even be able to leave work earlier if you make a conscious effort to limit the time you spend on the web and social media sites, making personal calls, or checking your bank balance. "We often get sucked into these habits that are making us much less efficient without realizing it," Stack says.

Oh if only I could have back the hours I've spent gossiping.

3. Rethink your errands.

Consider whether you can outsource any of your time-consuming household chores or errands.

Could you order your groceries online and have them delivered? Hire a kid down the street to mow your lawn? Have your dry cleaning picked up and dropped off at your home or office? Order your stamps online so you don't have to go to the post office? Even if you're on a tight budget, you may discover that the time you'll save will make it worth it.

Stack also suggests trading services with friends. Offer to do tasks that you enjoy or that you were planning to do anyway.

"You could exchange gardening services for babysitting services," Stack says. "If you like to cook, you could prepare and freeze a couple of meals and give them to a friend in exchange for wrapping your holiday gifts."

I am so in favor of exchanging services! There are some things that I just can't stand to do.

4. Get moving.

It's hard to make time for exercise when you have a jam-packed schedule, but experts say that it may ultimately help you get more done by boosting your energy level and ability to concentrate.

"Research shows exercise can help you to be more alert," Brooks says. "And I've noticed that when I don't exercise because I'm trying to squeeze in another half hour of writing, I don't feel as alert."

Samantha Harris, a lawyer who works for a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia, says she recently started sneaking in a trip to the gym two or three mornings a week before her family wakes up. "It's been a real boost in terms of the way I feel for the rest of the day," she says. "I feel like my head is clearer and I've had a little time to myself."

I'd have to agree. I've started getting up early to do a Yoga DVD and it's way worth it.

5. Remember that a little relaxation goes a long way.

Don't get overwhelmed by assuming that you need to make big changes to bring more balance to your life. Brooks recommends setting realistic goals, like trying to leave the office earlier one night per week.

"Slowly build more activities into your schedule that are important to you," he says. "Maybe you can start by spending an hour a week on your hobby of carpentry or planning a weekend getaway with your spouse once a year," he says.

Stack points out that even during a hectic day, you can take 10 or 15 minutes to do something that will recharge your batteries. "Take a bath, read a trashy novel, go for a walk, or listen to music," she suggests. "You have to make a little time for the things that ignite your joy."

What ignites my joy? A good book, great chocolate, and a shirtless movie star with great abs.

I'm a Big Kid Now

Ladies and Gentlemen I am here to tell you that I have a potty trained son.I've been toying with potty training Wes for several months now, and I've finally bitten the bullet and done it! Ok, so today was only day 4 of Wes in big boy underpants, but he's doing so well. My friend Sarah recommended Lora Jensen's 3 Day Potty Training Method to me and I will be forever grateful. I really had no idea how I was going to do this. My best guess was to put him in his underpants during the day, pull ups at night and a whole lot of bribes and patience.

What I got from Lora Jensen's Method was a plan. Basically she asks you to take 3 full days where you can put your main focus on your potty trainee, and be prepared to use lots of positive reinforcement and NO negative attitudes. She also promotes giving your toddler the reigns in telling you when they need to use the facilities.

So this is my first potty training experience, but I think that it went really well. Wes picked up on it quickly, however I should say that Wes is over 2 1/2 so maybe he was just more than ready for his mom to get in gear.

So if you're looking for a way to get your kid to use the potty check out the 3 Day Potty Training Method.

Sugar Cookies

I've always been afraid of Sugar Cookies. They intimidate me. Don't get me wrong, I can do a MEAN chocolate chip cookie, but when it goes past mixing and spooning dough onto a cookie sheet I get a little nervous. But I found this simple recipe on Stephanie's Kitchen and decided to finally take them on. I had to improvise a little because I don't own a rolling pin (I ended up using a water bottle, but I think it got the job done). I think they turned out really well, I especially liked the frosting recipe. Although next time I think I will pay more attention to the thickness of my cookies. :) If you've been a coward like me give these a try. If I can do it, so can you.

Soft Sugar Cookies

1 cup butter
1 egg
1 cup powdered sugar
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tarter
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla

In a large bowl, cream butter. Add egg and mix. Add powdered sugar and beat well. Add remaining ingredients and mix. On a floured surface, roll out dough about 1/2 inch thick. Add additional flour if dough is too sticky. Cut dough into desired shapes. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Cool on wire rack and frost with Buttercream Frosting.

Buttercream Frosting

1/3 cup butter
4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
milk

In a bowl beat butter until fluffy. Gradually add 2 cups of the powdered sugar, beating well. Slowly beat in the 1/4 cup milk and vanilla. slowly beat in remaining sugar. Beat in additional milk, if needed, to make of spreading consistency. Tint with food coloring, if desired.

Instant Star = Instant Favorite

Instant Star is my new favorite show. The show focuses on the first winner of a Canadian version of American Idol, called, what else but, Instant Star. You get to see Jude win the contest, record her first album, and even go on her first tour. I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that I really like the music on this Canadian, Teen Nick show. Even Tad likes it!
Check out Anyone But You
Check out White Lines
Jude Harrison is the winner. She went having big dreams to living her dream in an instant. Along with the title of Instant Star, she also won a recording contract at G-Major records. Now she's tackling the challenge of making her first record, while trying to not get lost in the drama of the life of a teenage girl.
Sadie is Jude's seemingly perfect sister. When she sets her sites on something she gets it. She wins awards in everything she does from horse riding to debate team. Sadie and Jude now have to find a balance where they can be friends and sisters at the same time. (PS. You can also see Laura Vandervoot on Smallville as Clark's Kryptonian cousin Kara)
Jamie is Jude's long time best friend who's been secretly in love with her for pretty much ever. Jamie and Jude try to make it work, but I think we all knew from the beginning it was never meant to be. He loves music ALMOST as much as Jude does, and is an excellent band manager. At least, he's trying to convince G-Major of that.
Little Tommy Q, as he was known in his days in his boy band, Boys Attack, is now a serious writer/producer for G-Major. More importantly, he has been assigned to be Jude's writer/producer. Despite some skepticism on both sides at the beginning they quickly become aware of their mutual respect for each others' careers. On top of that is a growing attraction that they can't seem to stop.
Even though they both feel the same way about each other the sad fact is that Jude is 16. So they agree to tuck those feelings away.
Although that's sometimes easier said than done.
You can watch the first 2 seasons of Instant Star on Netflix Instant Play. Give it a try!
